Date Calculator

Count the days until a date, the days since one, and when each milestone falls.

Days until

Counts how many days are left until a date. Pick a date in the past and it counts how many days have gone by.

Days left
D-DAY
If that date has already passed this year, next year’s date is used.

There are two ways to count days, and they differ by one

Most disagreements between date calculators are not arithmetic errors. They come from two different conventions for whether the first day counts.

ConventionHow today countsWhere you meet it
    Exclusive
    (days until)
    Today is day 0.
Days left = target − today
Deadlines, exam countdowns, notice periods, delivery dates
    Inclusive
    (day numbering)
The first day is day 1.
    Day n = start + (n − 1) days
Milestones, day counts, hotel nights, contractual day counts

The Days until tab above is exclusive; the Milestones tab is inclusive. Rather than pick a side, the countdown result carries a Counting today row so you can read both numbers off the same screen.

Why day 100 is 99 days after the start

Once the start date is day 1, reaching day 100 only needs 99 more days to pass. Adding a full 100 days overshoots by one and lands on day 101. This single step is behind most of the one-day disagreements between day-counting apps.

Started on 1 March → day 100 is 8 June

1 March plus 100 days is 9 June, which is day 101.

An anniversary is not 365 days

An anniversary is the day the calendar date comes round again, not a fixed number of days. If a 29 February falls inside the span, the first anniversary sits 366 days out instead of 365. Counting purely in days drifts by a day every leap year.

So the two kinds of milestone are computed differently here. Day milestones — day 100, day 500, day 1000 — are reached by adding days. Year milestones are matched on the calendar date. Both appear in the same table, which is why the day figure and the year figure will not always agree to the day.

    Counting backwards

Enter a date that has already passed and the count runs the other way, shown as D+. That covers days since a start date, days sober, days into a project, or how long ago something happened.

Time of day and time zones

Every date here is handled at local midnight. Mixing in a time of day is what makes some calculators return a different answer in the morning than in the evening; pinning everything to midnight removes that drift. The trade-off is that the result follows the clock on your own device, so a traveller crossing a date line may see the count change.

    Common questions

    Does the countdown include today?
No. The target date itself is the day you are counting to, and today is day 0. The inclusive figure is shown separately in the “Counting today” row.
Why does day 100 fall 99 days after the start date?
Milestone counting treats the start date as day 1, so 99 more days have to pass to reach day 100. Adding a full 100 days lands you on day 101.
Is the first anniversary always 365 days later?
No. An anniversary is the day the calendar date matches again. If a 29 February falls in between, that is 366 days rather than 365.
    Are leap years handled?
Yes. Dates are walked on the real calendar, so 29 February is counted exactly once in the years that have one.

    How this counts
    · Dates are handled at local midnight, so the answer does not shift with the time of day.
    · Days until excludes today; the Counting today row gives the inclusive figure.
    · Milestones count the start date as day 1, so day 100 falls 99 days after it.
    · Year anniversaries are matched on the calendar date, so leap years are exact.
